Founded in Épernay in 1849 and still entirely family-owned, Pol Roger has built its reputation on extended lees ageing, selective vintage declarations and cellars that run thirty-three metres beneath the city.
What happened
Pol Roger has long occupied a particular position in Épernay: a house that does not court attention yet rarely disappoints those who seek it out. Founded in 1849, it remains one of the last major Champagne houses to be entirely family-owned and managed — a distinction that, in a region increasingly shaped by large corporate portfolios, carries genuine weight.
The house's approach is most legible in its non-vintage Brut Réserve, known by its white foil. Where the legal minimum for non-vintage Champagne requires fifteen months on lees, Pol Roger ages this wine for a minimum of three years before disgorgement. The result is a reserve cuvée built for coherence rather than immediacy.
Vintage releases follow an equally measured logic. Pol Roger declares a vintage only in years judged to be of exceptional quality, resisting the commercial temptation to release a dated wine annually. The house's Blanc de Blancs, sourced exclusively from Grand Cru Chardonnay vineyards in the Côte des Blancs, exemplifies this single-variety precision within that selective framework.
At the summit of the range sits the cuvée Sir Winston Churchill, created in homage to the statesman's celebrated affinity for the house. A Pinot Noir-dominant blend, it undergoes an extended period of ageing before release — a timeline that reflects the house's broader philosophy of patience over expediency.
Underpinning all of this is the physical reality of Pol Roger's cellars, which descend to approximately thirty-three metres beneath Épernay. At that depth, a naturally stable temperature of around nine degrees Celsius provides the slow, even maturation that the house's style demands.
