The Millésime Decision: How Champagne Houses Declare a Vintage Year

Declaring a vintage is among the most consequential choices a Champagne house makes, committing a single exceptional harvest to an expression that will evolve for years or decades.

Each year, across the vineyards of Champagne, producers face a defining question: does this harvest merit a vintage declaration? The millésime — a Champagne drawn exclusively from a single exceptional year's harvest — stands apart from the non-vintage blends that form the backbone of most houses' output. Where non-vintage wines draw on multiple harvests to achieve consistency, a declared vintage commits the winemaker to the singular character of one year.

Champagne regulations set a clear threshold: at least 80 per cent of the blend in a millésime must originate from the declared harvest year, with the remaining portion permitted to come from reserve wines. That minimum lees-ageing requirement is also considerably more demanding — three years for a vintage wine, against fifteen months for non-vintage releases.

The assemblage, or blending process, remains the winemaker's principal instrument. In a vintage year, it must reconcile two distinct obligations: faithfully expressing the harvest's own character whilst sustaining the recognisable identity of the house. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier — the region's principal varieties — are drawn from across multiple crus to achieve the complexity a declared vintage demands.

Why it matters

The decision to declare a vintage is made independently by each house or grower. There is no collective announcement, no regional consensus: one producer may declare a millésime that a neighbour chooses to absorb quietly into their reserve stocks. This independence means that a declared vintage carries the full weight of a producer's individual judgement about the quality and longevity of a given harvest.

For the consumer, a millésime represents a commitment to time. The extended lees-ageing requirement alone ensures that a vintage Champagne reaches the market considerably later than its non-vintage counterpart, and the finest examples are understood to continue developing in bottle long after release.

Context

The architecture of Champagne blending is designed, above all, for consistency. The non-vintage blend — assembled across years, varieties, and crus — exists to deliver a reliable house style regardless of annual variation. The millésime inverts that logic entirely, placing the singularity of a year at the centre of the wine. It is, in that sense, the exception that illuminates the rule: a deliberate departure from Champagne's most fundamental winemaking discipline.
